These were created to be the highest level of Abumi stirrups.  Heavily lacquered pieces like these were made for the highest ranking and wealthiest of Samurai like Damiyo and the family members of the shogun.  The motif is of Koi climbing a waterfall.  This is a symbol of perseverance and strength.   The lacquer has some cracks and chips consistent with the age
