Boro Shikimono

Sold out

Antique shikimono 敷物 (rug) for kotatsu 炬燵 (low table with heating element) made of boro 襤褸, with sashiko 刺し子 (traditional hand stitching or quilting used as reinforcement and decoration). Boro is a Japanese form of recycling coming from an economic necessity in which fabric is patched on the reverse side to preserve the usability.  The beauty comes from the unintentional artistry created from layers of mending.

The hole in the center allows space for a small hole in the floor or space for the heating element. Beautiful as a contemporary wall hanging.
