This Bizen Jar depicts three of the Seven Lucky Gods. Bizen Ware is not glazed before it is fired. It originated in the village of Inbe, now part of the city of Bizen within the Okayama Prefecture in Japan. Known as one of the 'Six Ancient Kilns', the production of Bizen Ware within the city of Bizen continues to this day.
The three gods depicted on this piece are Ebisu, Daikoku, and Fukurokuju. Ebisu is the god of fishermen and luck. He is depicted with a fish under his arm and a fishing rod over his shoulder. Daikoku is the god of wealth and commerce. He sits on bales of rice and holds a lucky hammer. These two are closely associated, and are often used to watch over small shops. Fukuroku is associated with happiness, wealth, and longevity. He is depicted with a long head. The three are often depicted together as the Three Gods of Good Fortune.
