TSUTSUGAKI

Tsutsugaki free hand paste resist originally done with bamboo tubes and rice paste. The cloth was typically indigo dyed and then washed to remove the paste.   Often the resisted areas were also in panted to add vibrant colors. The one of a kind nature of these textiles great collectors items.   Traditionally the technique was used for Samurais banners and flags, over time the technique was adopted by more rural people for celebratory items like futon covers and festival clothing often incorporating lucky symbols and themes.
