FIREMEN'S GEAR

Fireman's gear from the Edo and Meiji Periods were not flame proof like today.  Instead to keep the fire fighters from catching alight, the multiple layers of cotton that the Japanese firemen's coats were composed of, would be drenched with water in the hopes that any drifting ember would not cause damage to the firemen's coat. We have many of these antique Japanese firemen's coats for sale.
