TSUTSUGAKI

Tsutsugaki (free hand paste resist) was originally done with bamboo tubes and rice paste. The cloth was typically indigo dyed and then washed to remove the paste.   Often the resisted areas were also in painted to add vibrant colors. Because they are all unique, they make great collectors items. Traditionally the technique was used for Samurai banners and flags, but over time the technique was adopted by more rural people for celebratory items like futon covers and festival clothing often incorporating lucky themes and motifs.
